If you have no idea what clay pigeon shooting is, it involves firing a shotgun (not an air rifle) at moving targets fired through the air at intervals. You get a very satisfying feeling when you see your clay burst into dust whilst smelling the gunpowder in the air! Known as clays (because they are made of clay!), the targets are fired from a machine called the ‘trap’. The person holding the shotgun normally shouts ‘pull’ and then somebody releases the clay in the trap so it flies through the air. The ‘pigeon’ part of the name comes from the origin of the sport when pigeons were used instead of clays, do not worry however as this was deemed illegal way back in 1921.
Clay shooting is a popular sport with all ages and both sexes. The Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA) now has around twenty-five thousand official members from amateur to National and International level and operates at over 450 registered shouting venues in the UK.
