Afternoon tea began as social activity for women way back in the 1840’s. It involved a variety of women getting together and preparing a selection of teas and homemade sandwiches and other delights to stem hunger before a late evening meal. When Queen Victoria was on the throne she decided to enjoy and participate in various afternoon tea activities herself and hence the events became more popular throughout the country.
